Hey guys I took a run up to Johnson City, TN the other night to see the JC Cardinals take on the Bluefield Jays in Appy league action.  It was my 1st look at the Jays this year, good squad.  I thought I would highlight a few of the hitters.

C, 1B)  Yorman Rodriguez- Age 20, 5’11” 215 lbs, bats and throws right.  He was signed out of Venezuela in 2014.

Rodriguez is a rugged young man and pretty filled out.  He looks ripped.  His swing is short, fast and linear.  He’s very quick to the baseball and the ball jumps off of his barrel.  He shows advanced bat to ball skills.  An aggressive approach, he saw a total of 3 pitches in the 3 at bats I saw and everything off of his bat was well struck.  The bulk of the contact is between the gaps and down.  One of the more impressive swings I’ve seen in the Appy this year.  Potential for plus hit and if he finds some lift there could be 25 HR too.  A young man to watch for sure.  No 1st impression of the defense  because he was the DH.

SS) Kevin Smith- Age 21, listed 6’1″ 188 lbs, bats and throws right.  He was drafted in the 4th round of the 2017 draft out of the Univ of Maryland.

Smith looks fairly well put together, I guessed 6’2″ 180 lbs on the field.  He has a long swing with above average bat speed and a natural inside out stroke.  Above average pop. There will be some swing and miss but 270-20. He showed good hands and a strong arm at SS but I didn’t get a good read on the range.  Its possible he outgrows SS, I like his bat better if he sticks.

1B, RF) Ryan Noda- Age 21, listed 6’3″ 217 lbs, bats and throws left.  Noda was drafted in the 15th round of the 2017 draft out of the Univ of Cincinnati.

Noda is a rugged dude with a long swing and fast bat.  Plus power, he’s very patient bordering on passive. But certainly worth watching.
