Hey guys, I took a run down to Spirit Communications Park in Columbia yesterday to watch the Fireflies (Mets) take on the Lakewood Blueclaws (Phillies). Lakewood is loaded this year, they were my preseason pick for the most talented team in the Sally. They’re lead by high profile CF Mickey Moniak. I thought I would make him my 1st Lakewood piece.
Moniak turns 19 in 5 days, he’s listed 6’2″ 185 lbs, bats left and throws right. He was drafted 1st overall by the Phillies in the 2016 draft out of high school in Carlsbad, CA (San Diego area).
I thought 6’2″ was a little generous, I guessed on the field he was 6′ 170 lbs and he’s got some wiry strength to him. There is some projection but it’s hard to imagine him putting on another 20+ lbs of muscle.
At the dish Moniak has a closed, upright stance and remains pretty quiet pre pitch. He has a patient approach and shows good bat control. He laid off some tough benders and put together some lengthy at bats. The swing is short, fast and linear. He lets the ball travel deep and he shows quick wrists. He sprays sharp grounders and low line drives to all fields with the bulk of the contact up the middle. The ball does jump off of his bat. With this current approach he should have a high contact rate. Couple that with the bat speed he generates and the hit could play plus.
Moniak has gap power right now, long term his HR’s likely tops off in the mid to upper teens.
Moniak has plus speed and showed a very good 1st step in CF. I didn’t get a great read on the arm yet. I’ll get another look at Lakewood in early June and will update then.
Conclusion: Mickey Moniak is fun to watch. He does a lot of things well and has the potential to be above average or higher in 3 categories (hit, speed and glove in CF). We could be looking at a 290, 15, 25 type of player with a solid OBP. Not as risky as most prep bats he could move fairly quickly. Maybe get up to double-A by mid 2018 and the bigs by mid 2019 (Age 21).
Here’s a video captured by my friend, Baseball Betsy, who also provides all of the Lakewood (Phillies) photo’s for the site. She does terrific work, give her a follow at http://www.baseballbetsy.com/ or on Twitter @BaseballBetsy.
Next up at Notes is a Sixto Sanchez scouting report, that should land tomorrow, Cheers
