Scouting Alec Hansen, RHP Kannapolis

Hey guys I took a run over to McCormick Field in Asheville last night to see the Tourists (Rockies) take on the Kannapolis Intimidators (White Sox).   High profile RHP) Alec Hansen was on the mound for Kanny.

Hansen- Age 22, listed 6’7″ 235 lbs, bats and throws right.  He was drafted in the 2nd rd of the 2016 draft out of the Univ of Oklahoma.

Hansen is a big, strong, sturdy fellow with long levers, 6’7″ 235 lbs looked accurate.  He stands on the 1st base side of the rubber, has a high 3/4 release point and gets excellent plane on his pitches.  He utilizes a high leg kick and finishes with his momentum going toward home plate.  The delivery has medium effort and for a big man he repeats it well.

The fastball sat 92-94 (95) for most of the night, 91-93 in the 5th and 6th.  Some control over command but everything was coming down hill early.  Wasn’t finishing as often later in the game and left some fastballs up. 60

The 11/5 curve sat 76-80, it showed decent depth and good bite.  Not easy to pick up out of hand.  He buried most of them but did land a few at the knees glove side.  55

The slider- 86-87, I only saw a few but they had sweeping action across 2 planes and generated some awkward swings. 55

The Change- 82-86 came in fairly straight, more of a change of pace than anything else. 40

Sequencing:  He was 70% fastball early with 15% curve, 10% change and 5% sliders.  Those ratios pretty much held all night.

Conclusion:  I enjoyed watching Hansen work,  I know he had some inconsistencies in college that led him to drop to the White Sox in the 2nd round. But he’s got good stuff and he was consistently pounding the zone last night.  Hopefully he can continue to tighten the command and make strides with the change up.  He has the upside of a  #2 or #3 workhorse and I have no doubt the fastball could play way up in one inning work.

Up next at Notes:  Later today I’ll have a 1st impression piece on Asheville 3B Colton Welker.  And tonight I’ll be back at McCormick Field for Gm #2 between Kanny and Asheville.

I still have a fund drive going on to counter the costs associated with live scouting a league this size.  If you enjoy the content please consider contributing to keep Notes a viable option for me, because I love doing this.
