Hey guys I watched my 2nd of two games in Spirit Communications park in Columbia yesterday and I was excited to see the pitchers Merandy Gonzalez and Melvin Adon were going. More on Adon later but Merandy had a good game.
Gonzalez- Age 21, listed 6’1″ 195 lbs, bats and throws right. He was signed out of the Dominican Republic in 2012.
I guessed on the field he was 6’1″ 190, there is some projection left.
Gonzalez stands on the 1st base side of the rubber. He has a simple delivery that he repeats well, he finishes with his momentum going toward home plate. He has a fast arm and despite being 6’1″ he gets to a decent plane due to his high 3/4 release point. The effort level with the delivery is medium.
The Fastball- Sat 92-94 early (touched 95) fairly straight but it was coming down hill. Mostly 90-91 in the 6th inning, not to much of a drop off. 60
The Curve ball- 79-81 early, decent bite, 11/5, not easy to pick up out of hand. 77-79 late. He has a lot of confidence in the pitch he throws it in any count. 50
The Change- 84-85 early, 82-84 late. Some sink and fade. He does selling the pitch, matching the arm speed of the fastball.
Sequencing: A lot of fastballs early 80% 15% curve and 5% change, 2nd time through he was 70%, 20% 10%.
Command/control: Everything was down with the exception of a couple of curve balls that he didn’t get on top of. The fastball command was a little fringy though, he wasn’t consistently hitting the glove with it. He missed in a lot to right handers and left some in the middle of the plate.
Conclusion: I enjoyed watching Merandy work, he’s got a nice 3 pitch mix and upside to be a number 3 or 4 starter.
Up next at Notes: I’ll be in Greenville tonight watching Jason Groome throw vs Lexington Legends (Royals). I’ll be back to work tomorrow but if there’s time I’ll also have a 1st Impression piece on Khalil Lee (that may land later in the week).
