Hey guys I watched the Delmarva Shorebirds (Orioles) vs the Greenville Drive (Red Sox) the last two nights. One player of interest for me coming in was Shorebirds CF) Ryan McKenna.
McKenna- Age 20, listed 5’11” 185 lbs, bats and throws right. McKenna was drafted in the 4th round of the 2015 draft out of high school in Dover, NH.
McKenna has some wiry strength to him and 5’11” 185 looked about right. He has some projection left. He could add another 10-15 lbs of muscle, that could cost him a step though.
At the dish McKenna has a closed, upright stance, a longish linear swing and above average bat speed. His game is spraying sharp grounders and low line drives around the diamond. A lot of up the middle and the other way off of his bat. He has a patient approach, he laid off some tough pitches. There will be swing and miss with the length of his swing though. Pitch recognition is still a work in progress but he’s young.
I put the raw power at 50, McKenna showed decent pop particularly to the right center gap.
Speed and Defense: McKenna has plus speed and looked good in center. He showed a quick 1st step and ran good routes. He didn’t really get a chance to show off his arm in my looks. I’ll see Delmarva again next month perhaps I’ll be able to update that then.
Conclusion: Nice player, I enjoyed watching McKenna work. It’s probably an average hit tool perhaps slightly above. I could see 8-10 HR’s maybe 15-18 at peak if he finds some loft. He could steal about 20 bags. Expect roughly a 10% BB rate and 20% K rate. May have 4th or 5th OF as a floor.
I’m in Columbia for Fireflies vs Greenjackets
Planning to do 1st impression write ups after the game on Sandro Fabian and Desmond Lindsay
