My 1st look at Bobby Dalbec (3B) Greenville

Bobby Dalbec, courtesy of Kelly O’Connor,

Hey guys, I spent the first two games of the season at Fluor Field in  Greenville watching the Drive (Red Sox) take on the Delmarva Shorebirds (Orioles).  Prior to 1st pitch opening day, everybody was talking about Bobby Dalbec’s BP,  I got to see if for myself yesterday and he puts on a show.  I thought I would make him my 1st position player write up of the year.

Bobby Dalbec- Age 21, listed 6’4″ 225 lbs, bats and throws right.  Dalbec was drafted in the 4th round of the 2016 draft out of the Univ of Arizona.

Dalbec is well put together 6’4″ 225 looks accurate and he looks to be in fantastic shape.

At the dish Dalbec hits from a slight crouch with a semi open stance, he keeps his hands high and stays fairly quiet pre pitch.  He’s got a moderate leg kick for timing.  He’s got a long swing as you would expect from a big man and above average bat speed.  There is lift in his swing and the ball really jumps off of his bat.  I haven’t heard any readings yet but the exit velocity has to be impressive.

I’ve been impressed with Dalbec’s approach so far.  He’s seeing pitches and he’s shot a lot of balls up the middle and the other way  the 1st two days, which means he’s staying back and will be less fooled by off speed.

The Raw Power is real it’s 70 grade for me, in BP he hit a few shots over the monster in left center (Fluor Field has the same dimensions as Fenway).  And they hit the apartment building behind the wall about halfway up.  Had to be 440+.

Run: Average runner underway, slow out of the box it’s a lot of frame to move.

Defense:  Dalbec was a two way player at the Univ of Arizona and has plenty of arm for 3rd.  The hands look good but I didn’t get a great read on the range yet.  I’ll update this after a few more looks

Conclusion:  Dalbec’s a big man with the kind of power you don’t see very often.  There’s always going to be strikeouts but despite the long swing, if he’s not cheating the bat head I think he can be a 270 ish hitter with 25+ HR’s.  Body wise he reminded me of a young Mark Teixeira and he was a 3rd baseman coming up too.

I still have a fund drive going on, if you enjoy the site please consider contributing to help counter the costs associated with live scouting a league this size.  Thanks.  I attached a PayPal button and a link to the sites Patreon account. Cheers!
