Hey guys, last night was opening night in minor league baseball and I took a run down to Fluor Field in Greenville to see the Drive take on the Delmarva Shorebirds. On the mound for Delmarva was RHP, Lucas Humpal.
Humpal- Age 23, listed 6’3″ 180 lbs. Humpal was drafted in the 9th round of the 2016 draft out of Texas State Univ.
I thought on the field Humpal was more 6’1″ possibly 6’2″ the 180 lbs looks right, there is some projection left. There’s effort in the delivery but he’s athletic and he repeats it well. His release point is high 3/4 and remained consistent all night. He’s got a fast arm, with clean arm action and release. There is some fall off toward 1st base.
The fastball- 90-93 (94) with sink, he maintained his velo throughout his 6 innings for the most part though he was more on the low end as the game wore on.
The curve- 76-80 is tight with a sharp break 12-6 variety and Humpal has a lot of confidence in it and will throw it in any count to lefties or righties and can pound the zone or bury. He got some swing and miss and froze a few hitters also generated a lot of weak contact.
Change- 82-83 I only saw a few, all to lefties. Definitely saw some fade, he did a nice job mimicking the arm speed of the fastball.
Sequencing- There was a lot of fastball early 75%, by the end he was closer to 60% with 35% curve.
Control/command I thought he did a nice job all night putting the curve where he wanted it, either dropping in at the knees or burying it to both sides of the plate. The fastball command is a little more fringy.
Conclusion: I enjoyed watching Humpal, particularly the curve ball that’s a weapon. It’s a relief profile for me but it’s 8th inning stuff a nice find for the Orioles in the 9th round.
Next up at Notes I’ll be writing up position players Bobby Dalbec (3B, Greenville) and Ryan McKenna (CF, Delmarva) These should land tomorrow.
I still have a fund drive going on, if you enjoy the site please consider contributing to help counter the costs associated with scouting a league this size. Thanks. I attached a PayPal button and a link to the sites Patreon account. Cheers!
