Hey guys I took a run down to Greenville on Sunday to see the Drive (Red Sox) take on the Greenjackets (Giants). Jalen Miller was one of the players I was most looking forward to seeing coming into the year and this was technically my 2nd look at him.
Miller, age 19, listed 5’11” 175 lbs, bats and throws right. Miller was drafted in the 3rd round of the 2015 draft by the Giants out of high school in Sandy Springs, Ga (Atlanta area).
Miller’s got some wiry strength to him. I guessed on the field he was 5’10” 175 lbs. He’s going to fill out, he could add another 20-25 lbs of muscle.
At the dish he’s got an upright closed stance, a linear swing that’s a little long. His strong, quick wrists generate excellent bat speed. I would put the raw power at 45 right now and that should climb as he gets stronger.
Miller’s a little raw offensively particularly in the pitch recognition skills. Older pitchers are having there way with him right now. Despite the low walk rate in my limited looks he hasn’t been overly aggressive, he sees some pitches. Too soon for me to say whether he can pick up spin.
Miller has got above average speed right now. Defensively he looked good at 2nd base, the feet, the range and the hands all look very good and he’s got plenty of arm and a quick release.
Overall I liked Miller, he’s a work in progress offensively but with the bat speed he generates the hit should play at least average with potential for more. The power will be limited some by the swing plane perhaps 6-8 HR’s with a lot of doubles early in his career and 12-14 at peak. If he can find some lift those numbers should climb.
Eric Longenhagen (Fangraphs)(On Twitter @longenhagen) really captured the bat speed. Check it out
