Hey guys, I got a couple of looks at the Delmarva Shorebirds (Orioles) over the last few days as they were in town to play the Asheville Tourists (Rockies). I wrote up shortstop Ryan Mountcastle after my 1st look and today I want to talk about DJ Stewart.
Stewart was drafted by the Orioles 26th overall in the 2015 draft out of Florida St University. He’s 22, listed 6′ 230 lbs, bats left and throws right.
Stewart is a thick young man, when I saw him on the field I guessed 5’10” 230 lbs. He moves pretty well for his size but I wouldn’t expect speed to be a big part of his game going forward as he continues to fill out.
At the dish he hits with a semi open stance and a pretty extreme crouch. He takes long level swings, with decent bat speed. He’s hitting ground balls in bunches right now.
He’s a patient hitter, taking a lot of pitches and working counts. He makes decent but not great contact.
I have some concerns about Stewart’s offensive game. He’s not going to provide any value with his defense or with his legs, so there’s a lot of pressure on the bat. He’s strong and the raw power is plus but the crouch he hits in makes it difficult for me to picture his swing with added lift. Without the added lift I don’t know that he’ll hit enough to make the .120 ISO play out of the corner outfield spot. So he’s going to need to unlock the game power.
Defensively he looks fine in left field at least in the short and medium run. I didn’t get a good look at his arm strength.
Here we get several good looks at Stewart’s swing courtesy of Mike Rosenbaum (MLB Pipeline)
I have concerns but certainly not looking to bury the young man. Hopefully he can figure a way to get the power into games.
