Hey guys I got my 2nd look at Asheville right hander Peter Lambert last night, as the Tourists (Rockies) took on the Hagerstown Suns (Nationals).
Lambert, just turned 19 last week, he’s listed 6’2″ 185 lbs (probably 5-10 lbs heavier than that, there is some projection here but he looks pretty filled out. He looks to be in very good shape.) he bats and throws right. He was drafted by the Rockies in the 2nd round of the 2015 draft out of high school in San Dimas, Ca (Los Angeles area).
He stands on the 3rd base side of the rubber, he has a simple repeatable delivery and remains balanced throughout. A fast worker Lambert utilizes a high 3/4 release point and gets very good plane on his pitches. He’s athletic with a fast arm and quick feet and displayed a very good pick off move catching Victor Robles napping last night.
The 4 seamer was 88-92 touched 93 a few times, sitting 90-91 most of the night. The pitch is fairly straight and he commanded the pitch very well most of time there were a few left up and they were barreled. 50 pitch
The 2 seamer sat 90-92 with sink and arm side run. About 30% of his fastballs were 2 seamers and the opposing hitters weren’t able to do much with them. He commanded the pitch well hitting inside corner at the knees or missing in. 55 pitch
The Change sat 81-84 and threw a few at 86, he matched the arm speed of the fastball very well, not a ton of movement but there was some sink and a little fade. There’s not much of a separation between the fastball and change about 6-8 MPH. He commanded the pitch very well all night throwing the pitch low and in and low and away to both lefties and righties. You can tell he has a lot of confidence in the pitch. 50 pitch, played 55 because he commands it so well.
The slider sat 81-83, there was a nice tight spin, good bite and a late sharp break. He commanded the slider well either burying the pitch or throwing it for a strike on the outer 3rd vs righties. It is an out pitch. 60
Lambert also throws a curve ball he only threw one last night and he didn’t get on top of it. It missed in on the right hand batter at 69 MPH. So this pitch I’ll have to update at a later date.
Lambert’s a bull dog on the mound he comes right at hitters he was mostly fastball, change 1st time through the order. Mixing in a lot more sliders as the night went along. The 2 seam and the change are ground ball generators.
Lambert is also tough, he was hit with a comebacker last night taking a line drive off of his leg. The ball bounced off of Lambert to Ryan Mundell the Tourists 1st baseman he tagged the base for the 3rd out in the inning. Lambert hobbled to the dugout, the Tourists got a pitcher up warming immediately as you might expect and I was on Twitter saying Lambert is done for the night and I hope he’s not hurt too badly. He came running out of the dugout at the start of the 4th and pitched two more innings.
Lambert was fun to watch pitch he keeps a crisp pace and throws a lot of strikes 68 pitches last night 50 of them were strikes. Overall I think he can be a 3rd or 4th starter.
