Hey guys I got my 1st look at shortstop Milton Ramos last night as the Columbia Fireflies (Mets) took on the Greenville Drive (Red Sox) in Greenville. My 1st thought was he’s rail thin, a lot of room for good weight but it’ll be interesting to see how much he can carry as he look destined to remain thin.
Ramos, age 20, listed 5’11” 158 lbs (I’d guess he’s 5-10 lbs heavier than that) he bats a throws right. Ramos was drafted by the Mets in the 3rd round of the 2014 draft out of high school in Plantation Fl. (Fort Lauderdale area).
At the dish Ramos utilizes a semi open stance and a minimal leg kick. His swing is a little on the long side but he has a pretty fast bat. It’s a linear swing and he sprays line drives and sharp grounders between the gaps. He showed some pretty good pop in BP and in the game (a long foul ball to right). I want to get a few more looks before I put a grade on any of this but it looks like he’s got gap power right now
Ramos received a steady diet of fastballs last night so it’s too soon to say how well he picks up spin.
His defense at short was impressive, it was just one look but he displayed a very good 1st step, good hands and a strong arm.
Here we get many good looks at his swing courtesy of Fangraphs
Other Columbia notes
Vinny Siena displayed excellent bat to ball skills. Even his foul balls were hit hard. He’ll be in St Lucie soon
