McCormick tonight

Hey guys, I’ll be making my 1st trip of the season tonight to McCormick field in Asheville to see the Tourists take on the Lexington Legends.

Parker French courtesy of baseballamerica.com

The Tourists are a Rockies farm club and they’ll have Parker French on the mound.  I saw French last week in  Greenville. He throws a high 80’s 2 seem fastball that runs in on righties and a slider.  He also threw a few pitches at 93-94 I think they were 4 seemers.

Foster Griffin courtesy of milb.com

The Legends are a Royals farm club, and they’ll be throwing high profile lefty Foster Griffin, he was taken at the end of the 1st round in the 2014 draft.  Griffin had a bumpy 1st full season, but he pitched better in the 2nd half and he’s off to a pretty good start in 2016. This will be my 1st look at him.

I’ll be live Tweeting throughout the game @AshevilleSoxFan and you can expect a Griffin write up in the next couple of days,

Two under the radar Toolsy center fielders

Hey guys,  I’m a sucker for athletic, toolsy players, especially if they can play a premium defensive position.

Here’s two unheralded young players that have displayed fast bats, decent pop, excellent speed and they can go get it in center.

Tito Polo

1st up is Tito Polo, West Virginia Power (Pirates) age 21, is listed 5’9, 185 lbs (that looks accurate), he bats and throws right. He was signed out of Columbia in 2012.

Polo stood out in BP, despite not being a big guy, he was putting a charge into some baseballs and showed terrific bat speed. After he hit,  he shagged fly balls in center and showed very good range seemingly gliding to the baseball, he also went back on a ball and made it look easy.

At the plate he hits with an upright closed stance, a linear swing that’s a little on the long side and utilizes an aggressive approach. Polo jumped on a Anderson Espinoza 1st pitch fastball the other night, lining the pitch into the left field corner for a double.

It was just one look but he was impressive, someone I’ll be keeping an eye on.

Here’s Tito Polo from Spring Training getting to play with the big boys

Mylz Jones

Mylz Jones, Asheville Tourists (Rockies) age 22, listed 6’1″ 185 lbs, bats and throws right.  Jones was drafted by the Rockies in the 8th round of the 2015 draft out of Cal St Bakersfield.

Jones also stood out in BP displaying excellent bat speed and he had a lot of loud contact in the two games that I saw of him.  He too has a linear swing that’s a little long but he’s a little more selective at the plate.

Jones played shortstop in college and he got looks at 2B, SS and 3B post draft but seems to have moved permanently to the OF.  Jones showed off his speed and range when Kyri Washington of Greenville  hit a shot into the triangle at Fluor field about 410′ away, Jones ran a long way and nearly made a circus catch on it.  I couldn’t believe the park held it but Jones got an excellent jump and nearly ran it down, impressive.

Here we get a good look at the swing courtesy of Eric Longenhagen

Two exciting young ball players I’ll be keeping an eye on.  The range of possibilities for these two players is massive as is the risk.  Both of these guys could be a 4th or 5th outfielder if they don’t hit enough.

I’ll be back soon with my 1st impression of Hickory SS Yeyson Yrizarri.
