I’m heading to Greenville tonight to see the Greenville Drive host the Greensboro Grasshoppers. This is the 12th time I’ve made the 65 mile drive to see the Drive. This team is so talented I wish I could have doubled that number.
The scheduled starters tonight are Tyler Kolek and Jalen Beeks. Excellent matchup, I’m excited to see both starters. This is also my 1st (and only) opportunity to see Andrew Benintendi as he’ll probably start 2016 in Salem and with just a week or so left in this season I don’t think I can make it back down, possibly if they make the playoffs.
Kolek was the 2nd overall pick in the 2014 draft, he’s listed at 6’5″ 260 lbs and is just 19 years old. At the time of the draft he was known for having a big arm featuring mid to upper 90’s fastball that has reached triple digits a curve and slider that have potential and a change that’s a work in progress. He was also known for his rawness and lack of polish which isn’t uncommon for a high school arm, but he’s a big ceiling big risk pitcher.
By all accounts Kolek has had a difficult year in 2015 and his premium velocity has apparently backed up. I’m looking forward to seeing him and I’ll be back tonight or tomorrow with my thoughts.
Jalen Beeks was drafted in the 14th round in the 2014 draft He’s listed at 5’11” 195 lbs and is a 22 year old lefty. He is probably Greenville’s best pitcher now that Michael Kopech is serving a 50 game suspension for amphetamines. He has a nice 3 pitch mix featuring a low to mid 90’s fastball a mid 80’s slider and change.
