Asheville is in town and they’re throwing Jesus Tinoco the hard throwing righty that came over in the Troy Tulowitzki trade and he’s facing high profile prospect Touki Toussaint who came to the Braves in a Diamondbacks salary dump.
Tinoco sits 93-95 with sink and arm side run and he mixes in a high 70’s curve of the 12-6 variety that has a nice snap when he get on top of it and a low to mid 80’s change with some fade. Unfortunately He wasn’t able to keep his velocity as by the 5th inning he was sitting 89-91 and all of pitches were losing there effectiveness. There’s tools here though and he’s only 20. He could benefit from adding good weight as he’s listed at 6’4″ 190 that would certainly help him build stamina. I’ve only got one look at this point so maybe he’s held his stuff longer in other outings.
Touki Toussaint was the DBacks 1st rd pick in the 2014 draft and he was part of a highly controversial trade to the Braves this Summer. He features a mid 90’s heater that bears in on righties, a fall off the table curve that he can really snap off and a mid 80’s change that has good movement. I got one look at Touki here in Asheville soon after the trade and he was struggling to find a consistent release point and he seemed out of sink with his delivery. When he was drafted he was billed as having big time stuff but very raw and that’s what i saw. It will be interesting to see if he can start repeating so we can get a real read on the stuff. The Braves have a good track record with pitchers so hopefully they can fix him.
I’ll be back tomorrow with a new Sally SP matchup of the day and I’m about halfway through a Stephen Tarpley article describing what I saw in my one look at the lefty (that should land this afternoon or evening) Thanks for stopping by.
